An endangered red panda cub has been born at the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester.

Zoo officials say Raji, the zoo's female red panda, gave birth to a cub on Thursday, June 27. Officials say while Raji abandoned the cub, as is common for the first-born cubs of red pandas, staff members are bottle-feeding the cub.

“The good news is that the cub nursed initially and received colostrum from mom, which is incredibly important to survival," Zoo veterinarian Dr. Chris McKinney said in a statement. 

The zoo's male red panda, Willie, is the father of the cub and also fathered cubs Lukas and Micah with female Starlight.

“Animal Health and Animal Care teams are providing excellent care to ensure he has what he needs," Seneca Park Zoo Director Steve Lacy said in a statement. “The first thirty days are crucial, and the cub is being monitored and fed around the clock. This adorable red panda is gaining weight appropriately, and we are excited to share this great news with the public.”

Guests can go and see the cub through viewing glass in the zoo's animal hospital beginning this Tuesday. 

The zoo says it will be a month before staff will be able to confirm the cub’s gender.

Red pandas are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
