Funeral arrangements are set for a Genesee County Sheriff's sergeant who died while attempting to make an arrest at Batavia Downs over the weekend.
Calling hours for Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello, 54, will be held on Friday from 2 - 8 p.m. at the Call Arena at Genesee Community College. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the same location. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Sgt. Sanfratello was posted to a special assignment detail at Batavia Downs when he died during an incident with a patron, according to authorities. Batavia police say the 32-year veteran of the force was escorting two people out of the casino early Sunday morning after a verbal confrontation when they allegedly became combative.
Sanfratello was arresting one of the individuals after a struggle when investigators say he was then attacked by the second patron. During the incident, they say the sergeant became unresponsive and was pronounced dead.
