A blood drive is taking place on Thursday in honor of fallen Rochester Police Officer Daryl Pierson.

The memorial blood drive is being hosted by the Rochester Police Locust Club at its headquarters on Lexington Avenue. The police union says there are several openings it is looking to fill.

Appointments can be scheduled online by clicking here, but walk-ins are also welcome.

Officials say the need for blood is constant and something that only volunteers from the community can help meet. Someone needs a unit of blood every 2-3 seconds across the country.

“Daryl’s life left such an impact on our Rochester community," said Rochester Police Locust Club Vice President Adam DeVincentis. "We want to continue to honor his memory by helping others through the American Red Cross.”

Officer Pierson was shot by a suspect during a foot chase on September 3, 2014. He later died from his injuries.

Thursday's memorial blood drive runs from noon-6 p.m.
