PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Erie Canal is a summer hotspot for outdoor activities, from biking the trails to spending time on the water. Getting on the water, though, can be a little tricky for those with disabilities. That’s why one Pittsford resident, Barbara Jablonski, came up with an idea to make the area more accessible. Now with the opening of the canal’s handicap-accessible kayak launch, it truly offers something for everyone, no matter your ability.
“I’ve had many broken bones and injuries,” Jablonski said. “Pretty bad injuries, and, uh, being flexible and getting off the dock is almost impossible for me. But I can use this ramp and it’s wonderful.”
Jablonski brought her idea to Pittsford Town Supervisor Bill Smith, who supports the endeavor to enhance recreational activities for the community. Along with Jablonski’s input, Smith and his team have been working on the project for the past year to have it ready for this boating season.
“When she mentioned this to me that we should have this,” Smith said. “My first thought was, gee why didn’t I think of that? But you know good ideas come from anywhere.”
The new launch will make boarding and docking a smooth sail for kayakers due to the dock’s wheelchair-accessible ramp and the addition of guiderails and handrails for easy navigation.
“Many, many, many people are going to be kayaking because they can buy lightweight boats and they can safely get in the water,” Jablonski said.
And not only can residents safely get in the water, but they can do it all by themselves if they need to.
“I can do this by myself, I don’t have to depend on anybody holding the boat for me and we have a wonderful time,” Jablonski said.
