BROCKPORT, N.Y. —  Recycling electronics giant Sunnking in Brockport is having its first-ever Shredder naming contest. It's not just any Shredder, this thing chews up 10 million pounds of recycled devices each year.

What You Need To Know

  • Sunnking celebrates Global Recycling Day and Earth Month by allowing residents to name its live-streaming electronics Shredder

  • Sunnking was founded in 2000 as an electronic device reseller and recycler

  • The "Name the Shredder" contest continues until April 12

Sunnking is all about responsibly reducing the amount of e-waste in landfills. The team reuses, repairs and recycles any and all electronics from monitors to computers and cellphones. The team disassembles all kinds of electronics to make the best use of materials.

“You don’t want them in the landfill, you don’t want them in the water or in the ground or anywhere, so if we can push the stuff to become something new, I think that’s everyone’s goal at this point,” said Robert Burns at Sunnking.

Sunnking's multipoint industrial shredder grinds through 10 million pounds of electronic gear a year. You can even watch your old office computer go bye-bye on the SunnKing shredder live stream. Sunnking has increased recycling volumes to over 25 million pounds annually and is New York State’s first R2 certified recycler.

“We are making sure that what you are not using isn’t just tossed in the trash,” said Burns. “It’s going to a good cause and a good ending. Somebody else could use it or it gets made into something new that you buy later on. We really wanted to have some fun with the shredder. The five finalists are Shreddy Krueger, Slim Shreddy, Sir Chomps-a-Lot, Shreddie Van Halen and Shreddy Munster.”

You can vote for your favorite online at Sunnking through on April 12. The winning name will be announced April 14. Some participants will receive a swag bag of prizes.
