ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Buying school supplies can add up. To counter the costs, local organizations want to help.
Fidelis Care sponsored a back to school bash Sunday afternoon at the International Plaza in Rochester.
More than 60 backpacks filled with school supplies were handed out to kids, giving them a head start for the school year.
"We want the kids to be ready,” said Gildred Aponte, a youth engagement specialist. “Sometimes people can’t get or afford them so were able to give back to the community.”
A local business donated bikes that were raffled off to families and craft supplies were available free of charge for kids.
“Our main priority at the plaza is to be a place where the community can come be connected to resources and celebrate in a safe place,” explained International Plaza manager Jessica Delvalle.
Organizers had people lining up hours before the event waiting to get a backpack, which were gone in minutes.
Organizers hope to host more giveaways like this leading up to the start of school.
