A group in Avon is calling for peace as they remember the atomic bombing of Japan during World War II.

The Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace is calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

“What’s going on here is a vigil in commemoration of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, it’s the 75th anniversary,” said Holly Adams, Organizer of the Vigil and member of the Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace.

Three quarters of a century after the two bombs were dropped - the group performed anti-war songs and lit candles in honor of the World War II bombing victims.

Adams said “this is about eliminating nuclear weapons to create a safer world for our children, our grandchildren and for generations to come.”

Vicki Becker of Batavia said “nukes are to force people, to scare people and destroy our world, no, you can’t destroy this world.”

Becker believes force is the weapon of the weak, and she believes peace is the only way.

“We have to learn not to hate our brothers, but to love each other….. that’s a long step, but it can be done,” said Becker.
