Camping is a popular getaway starting with Memorial Day weekend.

Many privately owned campgrounds in Western New York are open with some restrictions.

KOA in Canandaigua is no exception.

The Grossglass family from Webster wants to be outside more than ever.

"The grandkids came for the day and they play around the site, they have their bikes and toys." Dan Grossland said. "Oh yeah, we usually [come] as soon as a campground is open in April, but this year that wasn't the case. We were able to get to the KOA here in Canandaigua and we are waiting for even the state parks to open. Just to be outside and get away from being inside the house all winter."

KOA Holiday in Canandaigua is ready for a busy Memorial Day weekend.

All campsite reservations at New York state parks are canceled through May 31.

"The upcoming Memorial Day weekend is pretty much sold out," Jon Arsenault of KOA Holiday said. "People are glad to get out of the house. They can't wait to go out and do something. A lot of people have campers and want to use them. We definitely are seeing some impacts of local events being canceled, but we are seeing people staying close to home."

There are some social distancing guidelines. There's a modified check-in procedure, limited group gatherings and the new pool is not open just yet.

"Camping is already kind of social distancing a little bit," Arsenault said. "All of our sites have way more than the six feet room that is required. It is a way for people to get outdoors and still follow those rules that will hopefully be continuing to decrease as the summer unfolds."
