Two weeks ago Governor Cuomo said salons and barbershops would be part of Phase 2 of New York's reopening. In Brighton, one salon planned to open Friday. That didn't happen.

It's been way too long since Barb got her last haircut

"Middle of February," she said of her last trimming. "My hair is so thick that it's like I just break out in a sweat.”

What You Need To Know

  • Barbershops and hairs alons have had to close their doors for the past few months

  • Governor Cuomo announced on Friday that they would be apart of Phase 2, but with restrictions in place.

  • 'Great Clips' in Brighton planned to open this Friday

For Joel Wright, his last cut was in January. He doesn't usually wait that long.

"I came with cash," he said. "No, I need a haircut really bad, actually need them all cut."

The two waited outside 'Great Clips' in Brighton, which had posted on social media that it would open on Friday.

“I don’t know. No lights are on,” Barb said. "“I’m going to sit right here and wait to get my haircut.”

When they got there, a new sign said 'Open Saturday.'

"They got to cut it sooner or later," Joel said of his hair. "I don’t want to look too good.”

The place was empty, so no one answered the phone.  The chain of salons - with independent, local owners - posted this, on social media:  “Local Great Clips franchisees are making decisions about reopening their salons with guidance from applicable authorities.”

This salon has clearly posted safety guidelines.  Inside, spots are already marked for social distancing.  Something Barb is concerned about.

“Absolutely,” she said. “I see on the news all of these pool parties and stuff like that and again very cringy, you know, but as long as they are wearing a mask and do the social distancing. I don't see any harm in it.”

With the opening of salons and barbershops now imminent, some folks can hardly wait.

“If I can’t get my hair cut today, I’ll get it cut tomorrow.”
