MENDON, N.Y. — The Sentinel newspaper has been around since 1989 and is adding towns to its must-cover list. It is now the official town paper for Henrietta.
A Mendon couple is proud to be a part of The Sentinel community newspaper family. Just about every inch of every wall in Tim and Deb Smith’s Mendon house is covered in sports and entertainment history.
“They all have stories behind them and they’re all in different sections," said Deb Smith.
“I started collecting stuff in high school when I was a kid and even earlier than that,” said Tim Smith.
Tim, a retired Victor teacher, thought he’d start a memorabilia business, but he just loves the stuff, the stats and the stories so much that none of it is for sale.
“What’s up in here is just the stuff that we treasure the most,” said Tim.
Tim and Deb have known each other since high school and reconnected after some 40 years apart. Yes, they’re in love and they discovered they enjoy writing about it and what’s going on in the communities they grew up in. They now write two columns in The Sentinel newspaper that covers 11 towns. It's published once a week every Thursday.
“We are the back page every week now and we also have a column on page two every week and then we supplement that with additional stories that happen as they come up,” said Tim.
They are sharing everything local with the locals and that means a lot.
“To us, for me to do this it’s a blessing to just reach out and help others,” said Deb.
Their weekly columns sparked a new passion for facts and quotes. They have now authored and published four books with a fifth one on the way.
“It’s about female comedians,” Tim said. “We’ve compiled their greatest lines from all of the people in there.”
They are truly local journalists who understand their community and enjoy telling us why.
Tim and Deb Smith’s books are available on Amazon. The Sentinel newspaper costs $1 each and is also available for a yearly subscription. You can also find it online at mhflsentinel.com.
