Don Reinhoudt, who won the 1979 World's Strongest Man competition, died Monday following a single-vehicle car crash in Pomfret, Chautauqua County officials confirmed Wednesday.

According to the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame, Reinhoudt finished second in the World's Strongest Man in 1978 and set 36 world records in powerlifting from 1971 to 1980. He set amateur records in the squat (935 pounds), bench press (606 1/2 pounds) and the dead lift (885 1/2 pounds). After turning professional in 1978, he set world records in the 8,000-pound trolley pull, 10,000-pound trolley pull, 20,000-pound Mack truck pull, the 3,000-pound barrel press and 1,000-pound girl lift.

According to New York State Police, Reinhoudt’s Jeep was traveling on Glasgow Road Monday morning before it exited the west shoulder of the roadway and struck a tree. He was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital where he later died. Police say an investigation remains active.

“I’m saddened to learn the news of Don’s passing. I will remember Don for his heart, which was as big as the rest of his body,” Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel said in a statement. “He was a true ambassador for Chautauqua County. He especially took care in assisting area youth, as demonstrated by his time working with our Youth Bureau from 1984 to 2007. He also served as the division’s director.”

Reinhoudt was a member of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame, the World Power Lifting Hall of Fame and the United States Power Lifting Hall of Fame, among other honors.
