Jamestown Public Schools is launching a community conversation regarding the logo, imagery, and name of Jamestown High School, known as the “Red Raiders.”
The announcement is on the heels of a national conversation over the use of logos and mascots that may be offensive to indigenous peoples.
On Monday, The Washington Redskins announced the team name will be changed after years of criticism.
JPS Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker said the initiative create an opportunity for the district to hear, and work to understand all points of view on the issue.
The district has formed a committee of students, parents, staff and community members to hear stakeholder feedback, according to a statement from the district.
We are committed to seeing this process through,” Whitaker said in a statement. “The subsequent introduction of legislation regarding this issue does not change our goal – to hear all sides of the issue and collaborate on a solution as a community.”
Whitaker said although the logo and name have been a long-standing tradition at the high school, the discussion will not be an overnight solution.
“We hope by talking about concerns and viewpoints in a committee format, we will find a way to bridge understanding and create an outcome that will make everyone feel heard in the process,” Whitaker said.
