The Week in Review

1. Some eye medical marijuana expansion bill after THC ban passes Texas House

All eyes are on the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP) after the state House voted to ban all consumable THC hemp products on Wednesday night.

If the THC ban is signed into law, TCUP will be the only program in the state where people legally can access THC products. Lawmakers are working on getting House Bill 46, a bill aimed at expanding TCUP, signed into law.

2. ICE reports arrests of more than 200 immigrants in San Antonio

From May 11 to 17, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended more than 200 immigrants in a week-long operation.

ICE reported arresting 275 undocumented and 178 criminal immigrants, according to a press release.

3. Small businesses in Texas struggle under the weight of tariffs

As tariffs continue to drive up costs for consumers, they’re also putting a serious strain on small businesses across the country — including in Texas.

This financial unpredictability can be especially damaging for small businesses, which often are already faced with limited resources.

4. NOAA predicts above normal activity this hurricane season

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins on Sunday, June 1, and NOAA has released its annual outlook. NOAA is calling for above normal activity this hurricane season.

5. San Marcos considers charging fees for visitors to access the river

During a work session on Tuesday, the San Marcos City Council considered a proposal that would add an access fee for out-of-town visitors to access the city’s riverfront, one of the most popular tubing destinations in the state. 

6. Ground delay at Austin airport Wednesday amid FAA staffing shortages

Over 100 flights at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport were delayed Wednesday due to staffing issues at the Federal Aviation Administration, according to airport officials.

The FAA issued a ground delay on May 21 and listed the reason as “staffing.”
