As they celebrate their American Athletic Conference championship and prepare for Saturday's Army-Navy rivalry, the Army football team learned their postseason fate Sunday.
The Black Knights (11-1) will play Marshall in the Independence Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 28, in Shreveport, La. Kickoff is at 9:15 p.m., and ESPN will air the game.
Army, up five spots to No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25 poll, is coming off a 35-14 home win over Tulane in the AAC title game.
This is the sixth bowl bid for Army in the tenure of head coach Jeff Monken; his Black Knights teams have won four of the five bowl games in that span.
"Playing in a postseason bowl game is a measure of success for every team in FBS football. It rewards the players for a good season and recognizes the accomplishments of a great, team effort," Monken said in an Army press release. "I am thrilled that our team will play in the Independence Bowl ... and be rewarded for being conference champions and winning 11 games."
AAC Offensive Player of the Year Bryson Daily will lead Army's offense into the matchup: The quarterback has run for 29 touchdowns this season, tied for the Football Bowl Subdivision lead with Ashton Jeanty of College Football Playoff-bound Boise State.
Army's only loss this season came to No. 3 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 23. Marshall (10-3) is the Sun Belt Conference champion, having defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 31-3 in the title game Saturday.
The Thundering Herd haven't lost since a 24-23 decision at Georgia Southern in mid-October, but there will be a change on the sideline for the Independence Bowl. Head coach Charles Huff was named the new coach at Southern Mississippi on Sunday, and Marshall has said associate head coach Telly Lockette will be interim head coach for the bowl game. The AP reported that North Carolina State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has been hired as Marshall's new head coach.
Army's bowl preparation won't likely start yet: Rival Navy (8-3) awaits on Saturday in Landover, Md. The Black Knights will look for their third straight win over the Midshipmen to claim the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.
