Kingston Mayor Steve Noble is looking to implement a new speed limit around the city.

Noble is putting together a proposal that creates an area wide speed limit of 25 miles per hour on city streets.

He said this is part of ongoing safety initiatives to better protect drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Using studies that have proven that reducing speeds have decreased the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities, Noble decided this would be beneficial in Kingston.

He had the city engineer review traffic data and he was able to sign off on this for the majority of the city, as some state roads and roads connecting to outside of Kingston will remain as is.

"I've had a bunch of neighborhood meetings with council members, and the number one issue that we hear is speeding. And people want cars to drive slower in their neighborhoods because we have so many people out walking, biking, backing in and out of their driveways. We just want people to take it easy when they're moving around the city."

Noble said he's sent the official communications for this proposal in, and it will be presented to the Public Safety Committee on the Kingston Common Council during the third week of July.

If they approve, it will then go to the full council on the first Tuesday in August.

Noble said they can begin putting up new signage to enforce the 25 mile-per-hour speed limit right away if the Common Council passes this.
