Westchester County Executive George Latimer will challenge Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman for his congressional seat in 2024, he announced Wednesday.

The announcement sets up what could be a bitter primary contest for the Democratic nomination in New York's 16th Congressional District.

"These are difficult times. NYers need a Congressmember who will listen to every voice, not just those who agree with him, & who will deliver on the issues that matter," Latimer wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "I'm running for Congress because I know we need new leadership -- and I'm ready to deliver."

A former state senator, Latimer was elected Westchester County executive in 2017, defeating Republican incumbent Rob Astorino. He was re-elected in 2021.

"We need someone more interested in progressive results than showboating on social media," he said. "Those who know me know that I am and have always been that kind of elected official, and I look forward to talking to the voters about how we can all do better with new leadership in our Congressional district.”

Bowman was first elected in 2020. He was recently charged with a misdemeanor for triggering a fire alarm on Capitol Hill as lawmakers scrambled to pass a funding bill before a government shutdown deadline in September.

The 16th Congressional District includes a small portion of the northern Bronx and the southern half of Westchester County.
