The race is on for New York's 39th State Senate District.

Orange County Legislator Steve Brescia launched his bid to unseat Democratic incumbent James Skoufis on Sunday afternoon. Brescia, a Republican, currently represents Montgomery, Wallkill and Maybrook.

Brescia has a list of priorities.

“Deregulation from the over-regulation in the state,” Brescia said. “Repeal this bail reform, and then maybe look at it. It needed a few reforms. Not major reforms, because ... it took the discretion out of the judges' hands.”

Skoufis is on record as supporting changes to bail reform, including a proposed amendment to let judges to consider a defendant's potential for danger.

He said he looks forward to presenting his records to the voters later this year.
