Rep. Marc Molinaro formally announced his bid Friday for a second term in the U.S. House.
The Republican and former Dutchess County executive released a digital ad outlining his priorities that include public safety and securing the border.
“Every day in Washington, I put politics aside and work for everyone of every party who calls Upstate New York home,” he says in the ad. “It’s about the middle ground - where most of us live.”
Molinaro won a seat in Congress representing New York’s 19th congressional district in 2022.
The district, under current lines, stretches from Ithaca to the Hudson Valley. The map is poised to change, however, as a result of court-ordered redistricting.
Molinaro’s contest will be one of several across New York that are closely watched heading into November. Democrats are targeting the seat as a pick-up opportunity, as they look to reclaim control of the U.S. House.
Molinaro’s Democratic opponent from 2022, Josh Riley, is seeking a rematch. He has launched another bid for the seat after previously losing by just a few thousand votes.
Riley, a former congressional aide and law clerk for the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, announced Thursday that he raised nearly $700,000 in the fourth quarter of 2023, and enters 2024 with more than $1.45 million cash on hand.
Past filings with the Federal Election Commission show that, as of the end of September, Molinaro’s campaign had about $1.3 million cash on hand. That total does not include fundraising from the fourth quarter.
Democrat Dan Buttermann, who previously ran for the state Assembly, has also filed to run.
