A man was shot and killed by Poughkeepsie police on Thursday after officers responded to a report of an active assault at a residence on Fair Oaks Drive, according to officials.

Police say a confrontation between the armed suspect and police resulted in an officer shooting him with a service weapon. The unidentified suspect was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital but later died, according to police.

Police say the man attacked members of the Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team with a sword. Officials say two men were inside the home when police arrived at around 2:15 p.m., with one suffering from an injury.

“I’m not sure exactly what was used to injure the employee, but she received a laceration to her hand,” Paul Ackermann, board president of Mental Health of Dutchess County, said Friday.

Officials say the injured employee received stitches and was home recovering.

“We have very dedicated employees that put themselves in harm's risk on a daily basis, and they are truly dedicated, wonderful employees,” Ackermann said.

As of Friday afternoon, officials had not identified the suspect or the officer involved.

Officials say the incident is now under investigation by the New York State Attorney General's Office and New York State Police.

Mental Health America of Dutchess County, which was part of the response to the call, said in a statement that its workers "are doing OK. One does have injuries and the other did not. This is a very difficult and at times dangerous job."
