Federal prosecutors have charged Devin Ravine, 20, of Riverside, California, with sexual exploitation of a child after he allegedly targeted a 15-year-old girl from Rensselaer County. Authorities say Ravine, using the alias “Derek Johnson,” contacted the teen via a dating app, then moved their conversations to text and FaceTime, ultimately persuading her to send explicit images and videos.
The case came to light after the victim attended an FBI internet safety presentation at her school and bravely reported her experience to agents.
“In a room packed with her peers, she heard the message, recognized what was happening, and spoke up for herself. Because of her bravery, the abuse stopped immediately,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig Tremaroli.
FBI agents in Albany and Los Angeles coordinated to arrest Ravine within eight hours of learning about the abuse.
“We’re going to get you. We’re going to find you. You can’t escape it,” said U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III during a news conference.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities are working to bring Ravine to New York to face federal charges. Officials urge parents to talk with their children about the dangers of social media and online interactions.
