MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Finding an affordable prom dress or suit can be a challenge for many students and their families. That's why Middletown resident Ed Bloomfield said he's hosted a free prom extravaganza at Temple Sinai for more than 15 years.
"There's got to be a way to let everybody participate and feel good about themselves," Bloomfield said. "Nobody has to know where they got the items from, but as long as they had the ability to have something beautiful and feel good about themselves."
From designer ball gowns to suits, accessories and dress shoes, Bloomfield is partnering with Macy's, commmunity members and Kindness Rotary to provide resources for high schoolers in need.
Hope Wannermeyer, a member of Harmony Ministries, donated several items this year. She knows firsthand what it's like not to attend a high school prom.
“It was the money, as well as financial," Wannermeyer said. "My parents didn't have all of what's available now ... the limousines. A lot goes into it."
In addition to the costs associated with attending prom, Wannermeyer said she also didn't have a date.
“Nobody asked me to go to the prom," Wannermeyer said. "I was so tall, all of the guys were like here and I think it was the intimidation."
Now, Wannermeyer has a daughter of her own and wants to help Bloomfield continue paying it forward to other higher school students aspiring to attend.
"Hopefully, this will go on for many years," Bloomfield said. "I know that the contributions that we're getting are multiplying every year... more and more people understand where we're coming from."
Bloomfield and his team are providing prom donations at Temple Sinai from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 30 and April 6. Volunteers are also accessible for private appintments until May.
