Assemblyman Robert Smullen unveiled a new memorial sign Monday to honor his son Alexander John (A.J.) Smullen. The 14-year-old died last March when a car struck him in front of Bellevue Women's Hospital in Niskayuna.

Smullen also used the opportunity to discuss a bill he is trying to pass in the state Legislature, which would establish a traffic safety memorial sign program for victims of fatal car crashes. He is also calling for increased traffic safety measures on Route 7 where A.J. Smullen was killed.

Hours after Robert Smullen held a press conference last month to introduce his bill, another fatal crash involving a pedestrian occurred near the Bellevue Woman’s Center on Feb. 25.

"The A.J. Smullen Memorial Sign Program is something that would be beneficial to remind everybody, for all New Yorkers, for all of their loved ones across the state, to remind everyone to slow down and be careful when they're driving, and in the case of Route 7, that immediate action needs to be taken," Robert Smullen said.
