HAMBURG, N.Y. – Roderick Morrow sat in his new car inside the dealership showroom, his mind still swirling around the way his life has changed in just one week.
“I can’t believe what’s happening. Like right now, I’m overwhelmed,” he said. “I’ve never had nothing like this in my life. I’m just an average kid growing up on the East Side of Buffalo.”
The car was a gift from the West Herr Automotive Group after millions of people around the world heard Morrow’s name and his story. It started when Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen accepted his NFL Most Valuable Player award last Thursday.
“We’ve got such a great locker room in Buffalo and it takes everybody,” Allen said. “From the equipment staff to the training room, to the strength staff, to 'Slick Rick' in the mail room.”
‘Slick Rick’ is Morrow’s nickname around the Bills team facility, where he’s worked in the mailroom for 15 years. Morrow was stunned by the surprising shoutout from one of the NFL’s biggest names.
“And when he said my name, it was like I couldn’t believe it,” Morrow said.” I hate to cry. I still don’t believe it. When he said my name. I was just like, ‘Oh!’ I just started crying. I started crying.”
Morrow’s powerful reaction spread on social media faster than a Josh Allen touchdown pass. It was viewed more than 2.7 million times on X.
When people learned ‘Slick Rick’ takes the bus to work every day from his home in Buffalo more than 15 miles to the Bills facility, many commented that someone should buy him a car.
Allen has partnered with West Herr for years, so the auto group stepped up to hand 'Rick' the keys to his new ride.
“Just being a great teammate and obviously made quite a big impression on Josh and the team, anything that we can do to help a fellow Buffalonian, we certainly want to,” said Justin Rojek, with West Herr Automotive Group.
Morrow said he hasn’t had a vehicle in more than 25 years. It was just too expensive. Now, he’ll have reliable transportation to work, and perhaps more importantly, be able to drive his 15-year-old son Derrick where he needs to go, like his high school football games.
“Now he’ll be able to put his equipment in here and we can drive home,” Morrow said with tears streaming down his face. “This is unbelievable. I can't imagine how he’s going to react.”
‘Slick Rick’ is grateful to West Herr and Josh Allen for touching his life in remarkable ways.
“When I left work Thursday I said I’m going to be crying if he don’t get the MVP," he said. "I never knew that I would be crying because he said my name."
Josh Allen ended his MVP speech with the words, "Be Good, Do Good, God Bless and Go Bills." ‘Slick Rick'’s story certainly embodies that message.
And the year of Morrow’s new ride — a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse — goes great with Allen’s jersey No. 17.
