The city of Kingston will cease holding its Memorial Day parade after more than 75 years due to dwindling attendance, and will instead expand its Memorial Day ceremony, Mayor Steve Noble and the Kingston Veterans Association announced.

“It's with a heavy heart we had to make the decision to cancel the Memorial Day parade," Veterans Association Parade Chairman Chuck Polacco said. "Unfortunately, there has been a tremendous decline in attendance these past few years."

Memorial Day parade honors Americans who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. armed forces. Kingston's Memorial Day ceremony, typically held in Veterans’ Park near City Hall, will be expanded, Noble said.

The Kingston Veterans Association will continue conducting the ceremony, placing flags on the graves of veterans in the city and maintain the Mount Zion Cemetery.
