Democrat Paula Kay has officially defeated Republican Louis Ingrassia in New York's 100th state Assembly District to capture the Hudson Valley seat held for 20 years by Democrat Aileen Gunther, the Associated Press declared Wednesday.

Kay defeated Ingrassia with 26,117 (52.5%) to 23,656 (47.5%) votes with 99% of the expected vote tallied, according to the AP.

Kay declared victory in the race last week. She said her message of bipartisanship resonated with voters, and her top priority was improving conditions for working class people.

“My focus has been and will continue to be securing and finding housing for the people in 100th Assembly District. Housing, better access to health care and child care, making working families lives a little bit better every single day,” she said.

Kay's win keeps the district in Democrats' hands.

Gunther, a Sullivan County Democrat who was elected in 2003, is retiring.

Ingrassia, Wallkill’s DPW commissioner for more than 10 years, recently conceded the race on the Facebook.

"We may not have achieved victory today, but we've laid the groundwork for a brighter tomorrow," he stated.
