The city of Kingston is becoming the first municipality in New York state to opt into new property tax exemptions.
Kingston Mayor Steve Noble says he has signed legislation aimed at allowing new housing units to be developed.
It comes after the New York state budget allowed municipalities to partially exempt new accessible dwelling units from taxation for 10 years.
Mayor Noble says the goal is to approve 1,000 units of housing by 2029.
“We need housing on every level and across the City," Noble said in a statement. "This legislation allows for both homeowners to create additional housing on their property as well as developers who want to create or redevelop larger housing projects.”
To qualify for the tax exemption, it must be a new unit that provides independent living facilities and can't be used as short-term rentals.
