A group of girls from underserved communities in New York City got to spend a day on West Point’s campus.
The girls are members of Amplify Her Foundation partner organiztions: Bella Abzug Leadership Institute, Seeds of Fortune, South Asian Youth Action and Student Leadership Network, and guests of the Girls Scouts of Greater New York.
The organization works to support the girls to become leaders and change-makers.
For the first time, Amplify Her Foundation brought about 20 girls in grades 9-11 to tour West Point’s facilities, attend a class, interact with cadets and learn about different majors and opportunities West Point and the U.S. military offers.
The event helped connect students with cadets and inspired some of them to aim for a future at West Point.
“We are training leaders of character, so it's really important for us to showcase that and to ensure that we are bringing in that diverse talent,” said Maj. Maia Molina-Shaefer, officer in charge of the Corbin Women’s Leadership Forum and an assistant professor of French at West Point.
“I love it. I just like see them, and I picture myself in their shoes. So, it's great,” said Dahna Tapia, a student experiencing West Point’s campus with Amplify Her Foundation.
The United States Military Academy encouraged juniors in the group to apply to continue their academic studies there, and all of the high school students to take part in West Point’s Summer Leadership Experience, where they learn what it’s like to be a cadet for a week.
