A man who brandished a firearm at Poughkeepsie police officers was charged with multiple crimes after one officer shot him in response, city police said Monday.

Leopoldo Duartepalacios, 37, was arraigned in Poughkeepsie Court and charged with menacing a police officer and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.

He was taken to Dutchess County Jail on $20,000 cash bail.

Police say officers encountered Duartepalacios, who lives locally, at around 7:48 p.m. Sunday while responding to a call for a man with a gun in the 600 block of Main Street.

Responding officers tried to verbally de-escalate the interaction, but the suspect removed a semi-automatic handgun from his pants, police said. A uniformed officer discharged their service weapon and struck Duartepalacios, officers said.

The officers involved applied department-issued tourniquets and requested an ambulance, police said. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment and released.
