Solectrac officials say the company's e25G electric tractor can do anything a diesel tractor does without sacrificing power or performance. But some farmers weren't quite ready to commit to the product Thursday at the New York Farm Show.
“It's about 25 PTO horsepower, comparable to diesel tractors that are 25 PTO horsepower," said Martha Henniger, director of sales and marketing at Solectrac.
Henniger added that it's ideal for hobby farms, sports fields and greenhouses. Erin Dyer, the manager of marketing, said the life of its battery depends on how you use it.
What You Need To Know
- The e25G sells for around $30,000
- The tractor is ideal for hobby farms, sports fields and greenhouses, among other jobs
- Its expected life span is estimated at 10-15 years
“The low end is gonna be around four hours of working real hard before you get that 20 percent warning light," said Dyer. "Otherwise, you’ll get a full day out of it."
She said you can charge it overnight. Dyer estimates the lifetime of the tractor is a decade or more.
“They’re rated to last about 10 years if you totally deplete it and totally charge it every single day for 10 years," she said. "Most people aren’t gonna do that. We’re estimating around 12 to 15 years."
The tractor sells for around $30,000, which Hennigen said is 25% more upfront than a typical diesel tractor.
Cliff Glossner is a farmer who was intrigued by the tractor, but wasn’t ready to fully give up fuel just yet.
“For somebody that has maybe a garden or something like that, it’s ideal. But as far as getting serious about running a baler, I think it would be a little small," he said. "You’re gonna need diesel or you’re gonna need gas to run these real machines until they get this stuff all worked out."
He said electric tractors are a great idea, but the concept still needs time to iron everything out.
