A 41-year-old man who was shocked with a Taser and then shot and killed by troopers at a home in Ulster County had threatened them with a knife, State Police said Monday.

State Police said they and members of the County Sheriff's Office found Daniel K. McAlpin, 41, distraught and armed with a large knife Friday while assisting an Ulster County Mobile Mental Health crisis team at a house located on Clark Road in the town of Wawarsing.

Police said law enforcement officers tried to speak to McAlpin, and he ignored repeated commands to drop the knife.

In an attempt to take him into custody, Trooper Elias E. Strickland deployed a Taser, however, McAlpin advanced toward the officers with the knife, and a second officer, Trooper Jason T. Wurtz, fired his issued firearm, striking McAlpin, who was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to State Police.

Both troopers are assigned to Troop F.

The state Attorney General’s Office and State Police are investigating the incident.
