What You Need To Know

  • Daniel Prial, along with two other National Guardsmen, was killed in a helicopter crash on January 20 near Rochester

  • Prial graduated from West Point in 2012, served in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division as a helicopter pilot, and joined the National Guard in 2020

  • He was laid to rest at West Point Cemetery Saturday

After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 2012, he would go on to serve in Afghanistan, and this past year, he joined the National Guard.

Prial’s father Greg says his life was dedicated to service.

“[He] loved what he was doing. Loved flying, loved serving, loved being part of something more than self,” Greg Prial said. "He just loved learning, training, teaching others. He loved the aspect of being able to help.”

And his desire to help others led him to serve as a pilot in Afghanistan.

“He wanted to pull people off the battlefield and get them to medical help. They don’t have armaments on those; they go in bare and they get the soldiers off,” Greg Prial said.

Daniel's loss has been felt by the entire Warwick community, where he spent much of his life. And Greg says that everyone has grieved with them and shown their support.

“Neighbors, friends, strangers, people we’ve never seen, met, or heard of,” Greg said. “The church community, his classes … this community is special.”
