A three-alarm fire destroyed a building on Market Street in Wappingers Falls.
The fire department says fire in an apartment on the second floor spread quickly throughout the building. There were multiple apartments and four businesses in the building. The Red Cross says it's helping 28 people who have been displaced.
A firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
More than a dozen agencies responded to the fire.
"The fire advanced really quick and just took off on us, it was hard to contain with just the man power we had at our initial response," said Wappingers Falls Fire Chief Adam Van Tassel.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire officials believe the building is a total loss.
The Town of Wappinger is taking donations for those who lost everything, asking for gift cards. There's also a GoFundMe set up for donations as well.
