The City of Poughkeepsie says two male construction workers are now safe following a trench collapse on Dwight Street that left them trapped up to their waists.

After the emergency call happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday, the city says the workers were conscious and alert as rescue officials worked to remove dirt surrounding the men.

The collapse happened as workers were attempting to excavate a sewer line, according to the city. They say the walls of the 10-inch deep trench fell and unfortunately locked the men in as well.

The city says the men received "advanced" life support treatment as the walls were "stabilized" and they were dug out by hand. They were then transported to Mid Hudson Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
