A new dialysis center is getting ready to open in Cornwall.
Fresenius Kidney Care is the dialysis division of Fresenius Medical Care North America, in conjunction with St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital.
The clinic was relocated from a smaller space in Newburgh, and now has the ability to treat a maximum of 200 patients a week.
The clinic also has a home hemodialysis option for patients. At-home dialysis offers greater independence for dialysis patients, who would otherwise have to spend up to 12 hours a week in a center receiving the life-sustaining care.
Ramona Mack has been on dialysis for four years. She switched to at-home dialysis in December, and tells people to choose dialysis at home, because of the greater freedom it offers.
"It gives you independence to take care of yourself, and you want to take care of yourself more, and you just have the freedom. The freedom is just unbelievable," Mack said. "Anybody that's on dialysis understands the freedom part. You don't feel trapped. So I would highly recommend it to anybody especially if you like to travel."
Mack says she's now able to travel with the help of the machine.
She says she and her husband took it on a cruise and she was able to look out at the ocean while doing her treatment.
More than 29, 600 patients require dialysis treatment in New York alone.
