A local family is speaking out after a racist social media post targeted a Minisink Valley High School student.

N'Senga Kinzonzi says she was the victim of a racially offensive and physically threatening post on Snapchat, made by another student. Her family and attorney Michael Sussman are calling on the school district to do more by way of sensitivity training and education.

The young woman, who is an honor student and athlete, says these kinds of racist attacks need to stop.

"I want everyone to know the steps the school has taken won't stop a hate crime from happening," Kinzonzi said. "I want to be the last person in Minisink, in Orange County, in New York, to ever have to go through this."

The school district says the student who sent the post faced disciplinary action, but school leaders cannot "legally cannot discuss any resulting student disciplinary actions, including this one, for any reason."

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler responded to the incident Friday afternoon saying their office had no jurisdiction over the matter due to the age of the individuals involved. The matter has been passed on to the Orange County Attorney’s Office, who the DA says has legal authority with under-age offenders.

The DA also noted their Hate Crimes Awareness Initiative, which launced September 2018, along with a Hate Crimes Hotline. In November 2018, the DA's office says they held a training seminar for law enforcement officers and school officials.

"To provide them with information about how to recognize and investigate hate crimes, so that the perpetrators of those crimes may be successfully prosecuted," the DA said in a release.

Additionally, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney posted on his Facebook page Friday afternoon, expressing his beliefs on the matter.

"Saying you want to lynch someone isn't funny. Ever. Ever ever. We're not going to tolerate racism like this in the Hudson Valley. I stand with N’Senga and her family," Maloney wrote.

A Change.org petition was posted with a goal of 5,000 signatures, and currently sits at over 4,500.

"The desired outcome of this petition is to get Minisink Valley to conduct a proper administrative investigation, and to recognize the wrongdoings of their student. Racism/Prejudice is a learned behavior, usually beginning at home, and can be unlearned as well with the proper knowledge," the petition wrote.
