ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The pandemic's twists and turns have created a higher demand for mental health services. A local support group is helping to fill that need.

“I’ve gotten cabin fever sometimes," said Jenny, a COVID support group member. "Loneliness feelings because I like the camaraderie of being able to socialize with my friends.”

They are feelings many people have felt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It's impacted my social life and it's also impacted, just me being careful, more, more fearful in my surroundings, or because even though I wear this mask faithfully, that doesn’t mean everybody else does,” Jenny said.

It prompted Jenny to find help in the form of a virtual weekly COVID support group offered by the Mental Health Association of Rochester. She’s never had COVID-19, but the pandemic has definitely affected her.

“It’s a hardship," she said. "I'm used to going out, doing things -- movies, out to eat, plays and stuff -- and it's something I've strayed away from.”

“This has been a journey for everyone," said Chanteria Gadson, MHA director of social services. "And so folks that are already struggling with their own journey it's even more impactful.”

Support for all is important. For those struggling with their mental health, it’s critical.

“It can be daunting, it can be frustrating, but it's also a time to really be able to reflect on 'hey, where do I see my growth going?' ” said Gadson.

The COVID support group is open to anyone, though folks need to pre-register. Jenny says she has found comfort in it and much more.

“Friendship," Jenny said. "Friendship and also feeling like I'm not alone in some of the issues that I face.

“It’s like a COVID family."
