The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes did indeed hit the Southern Tier region Monday evening.

The first was confirmed in Sanford, in Broome County.

NWS meteorologists classified it as an EF-1 tornado, with peak winds at about 90 miles an hour.

The tornado was on the ground for nearly three-and-a-half miles and was about 200 yards wide.

It actually began across the border in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania and ended in Sanford.

NWS officials say a home on Kenyon Hill Road suffered the most damage with windows being blown out and shingles being blown off the roof.

A second tornado has been confirmed in Tompkins and Cortland counties.

This too was also EF-1 strength with up to 90-mile-an-hour winds.

This one went for 11 miles and was 200 yards wide.

The tornado uprooted and snapped a large shed and had its roof partially torn off.

Damage is still being assessed on a potential third tornado confirmation in the North Country.
