Severe storms swept across Central New York on Wednesday, including the city of Syracuse, and tornados occurred in Forestport, Oneida County, and Redfield, Oswego County, the National Weather Service confirmed.

A tornado packing estimated 90 mph winds struck Redfield just before 2:30 p.m., uprooting and snapping hardwood trees along County Road 17, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Hours later, at around 6 p.m., a tornado with 65 to 85 mph winds touched down in Forestport, according to the National Weather Service.

Several areas experienced tornado warnings all at the same time, from near Binghamton to just outside Watertown. The storms also sparked flash flood warnings as well, including in Lewis County, which at this time remains in a state of emergency due to flooding in some parts of the county.

Parts of Oneida County also got some pretty significant damage, especially the town of Forestport. The fire department there said on social media that many trees and wires are still down along Horton and Kincaid roads.

The National Weather Service is expected to complete a final assessment of the tornado in Forestport later Thursday.

Across the state yesterday, there were 42 tornado warnings. That's the most in recorded history, topping the previous high of 41 tornado warnings from May 1998.
