A Syracuse teen was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property after police say he was caught with a stolen car in Rochester. Investigators say this is the same person involved in an incident where an Onondga County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed two teenagers last year.
According to police, Javon Camber, 17, was arrested in Rochester as the alleged the driver who tried to flee from the deputy in a stolen vehicle in Syracuse back in September. As he was driving away, the deputy shot at the car, killing passengers Lueth Mo and Dhal Apet.
The incident started when two vehicles were reported stolen and were found at several smoke shops that had been burglarized. On Sept. 6, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy John Rosello responded to a call spotting the vehicles in the town of DeWitt. That’s when the sheriff’s office said Camber allegedly drove away and the two passengers were fatally shot.
There have been questions on why Camber has not been charged in connection with that incident. Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick and state Attorney General Letitia James have disagreed over who has jurisdiction to charge the driver.
In a statement, Fitzpatrick told Spectrum News 1 "The AG reads the statute as conveying jurisdiction on her for everyone involved in a fatal law enforcement death. I read it (as it clearly states) as conveying jurisdiction to her ONLY as to the officer.”
The attorney general’s investigation is still ongoing. Spectrum News 1 reached out to the AG’s office for comment on the disagreement and haven’t heard back. Fitzpatrick said both sides have agreed to postpone the dispute until the investigation is completed.
