Residents voiced their frustration at a public hearing Tuesday night in DeWitt as town officials voted to dissolve the East Syracuse Fire Protection District.
The vote was part of a plan to absorb the area into the DeWitt Fire District. Under the proposed plan, shared before the meeting by the Town of DeWitt Board, the dissolution would cost approximately $8,500, with no assets, properties or liabilities to handle. There are also no public employees of the district to let go, according to the proposal.
Some community members expressed disapproval in losing coverage by the fire department they've been accustomed to, with department officials like East Syracuse Fire Chief Paul Haynes voicing concerns about how the process played out.
DeWitt and the East Syracuse department's service agreement, which had the East Syracuse Fire Department covering the northern part of DeWitt, ended Jan. 1, according to the ESFD's Facebook page.
