The families of two teenagers shot by an Onondaga County sheriff's deputy following a car theft and burglary incident earlier this month in DeWitt have filed a notice of intent to sue the sheriff's office.

Dhal Pothwi Apet, 17, and Lueth Mo, 15, both of Syracuse, were killed in the shooting after the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says they attempted to run over Deputy John Rosello following two burglary incidents at smoke shops in Central New York in early September. Civilian video released by Attorney General Letitia James' office shows Rosello attempting to pin a white car in a parking lot and get out of his vehicle. The car then backs into trees, drives between the deputy and his car, and speeds off. Sheriff Toby Shelley said there was no bodycam footage from Rosello, but also expressed his support of the deputy.

Notices of claim were filed by attorney Jesse Ryder, representing the families. In the notices, Ryder says the events of Sept. 6 support "claims for federal constitutional rights violations, as well as state statutory and common law causes of action," calling the shootings "egregious and intentional violations."
