The Oneida County Democratic Committee chose not to endorse a candidate for the 22nd Congressional District due to the state's ongoing redistricting process, the organization decided Friday.

"As it stands, the redistricting situation is very fluid, and the committee wants more information before making an endorsement," the committee said in a statement. "There are several great candidates vying for this crucial congressional seat. What matters most to the committee is ensuring that Democrats reclaim these seats and that we regain strong majorities in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives. The Oneida County Democratic Committee will work as hard as possible to win these seats."

The New York Independent Redistricting Commission last week voted 9-1 on submitting new congressional maps to the state Legislature for approval that would make little changes to most House districts but would greatly alter the boundaries of the 22nd District. Currently consisting of Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties and a sliver of Oswego County, the new map would drop the Oswego County portion and add southern Cayuga County, including the city of Auburn, as well as northern Cortland County. The district would also cede the northern portion of Oneida County, including the city of Rome, to the 21st District, held by Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.

The new maps would still have to be approved by the state Legislature before taking effect.

State Sen. John Mannion, DeWitt Town Councilor Sarah Klee Hood and Utica University professor Clemmie Harris are all vying for Democratic nomination in the race against current Republican Rep. Brandon Williams. In recent days, the Onondaga County Democrats have endorsed Mannion while the Madison County Democrats have endorsed Klee Hood.

The Oneida County Democrats did endorse candidates for the Legislature, including state Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, Otsego County Board of Representatives member Adrienne Martini for the 122nd Assembly District and James Meyers for the 53rd state Senate District.
