A day after the state's Cannabis Control Board voted to advance regulations on adult-use marijuana retail licenses, the Syracuse Common Council met to discuss cannabis sales locally.

Officials discussed the roadmap to legal sales, saying that drafted regulations are to be released by May of this year.

They plan to include multiple opportunities for the public to comment on the proposed regulations.

Other topics they talked about included cannabis taxation, the breakdown of the different licenses, and how they're being used to promote equality in the industry compared to other states.

"Each aspect from seed to sale is broken up into individual licenses, and that's going to stop large multi-state operators, and individuals and companies with money, from coming in, and simply dominating the cannabis industry in New York state,” manager for intergovernmental outreach OCM Phil Rumsey said.

Additionally, New York’s cannabis law will automatically expunge an individual's past marijuana convictions.

The Common Council says they expect nearly 400,000 records will be cleared.
