After losing his bid for re-election to Congress in 2020, former Democratic U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi will be running for New York state Supreme Court judge.

The ex-congressman told Spectrum News 1 Monday that he will be a candidate for a justice in the state's 5th Judicial District, which includes the counties of Onondaga, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida and Herkimer.

The former New York state assemblyman was elected to New York’s 22nd Congressional District in 2018, defeating incumbent Rep. Claudia Tenney by fewer than 4,500 votes. A rematch with Tenney in 2020 ended with her reclaiming the House seat by just 109 votes after months of court battles. A judge didn’t order the certification of Tenney as the winner until early February.

The close race resulted in Oneida County's two election commissioners stepping down after a judge cited several problems with the Oneida County Board of Elections, including a failure to process many registration forms that were submitted by the deadline.

Brindisi announced in June that he would not try to run for the congressional seat again, saying now is a crucial time in his children’s lives with his son starting high school and daughter entering her final year of elementary school, and he wants to be closer to his family.

Onondaga County Bar Association President Danielle Fogel is also running for the seat.
