A bill ending religious exemption for vaccinations is now a New York state law. Lawmakers have been working on this legislation since the start of the measles outbreak.

Here are three things to expect:

  • Religion no longer exempts a child for vaccinations. That means without an immunization sheet signed by a doctor, children will not be able to attend a public or private school in the state.
  • However, a medical exemption is still in play for vaccinations. The new bill did not change an existing law that allows children not to be vaccinated for reasons like a weakened immune system.
  • The law goes into effect immediately. Parents will have up to 30 days to show school officials records signed by a doctor their child was vaccinated with the first dose of each required immunization.
