Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to approve an extension on a ban on residential evictions in New York that is due to expire on Sunday. The move comes, however, as state lawmakers are considering a measure that could strengthen the moratorium. 

"Obviously we update these things as we go," said Melissa DeRosa, the governor's top adivsor on Wednesday. "We're not going to let anybody whose evicted due to these circumstances be evicted." 

The ban is meant to halt evictions of tenants who have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing advocates are pressing for a stronger ban through state lawmakers who are considering a special session of the Legislature as early as next week to vote on a measure. 

One provision, as reported by NY1's Zack Fink, could ban all evictions in New York state in the coming weeks and any evictions for those tenants demonstrating financial hardship. Support for landlords who are facing foreclosure or tax liens is also under consideration.
