It's been a brutal winter in many parts of Oswego County, whose residents are still digging out from several feet of snow that fell last month and are now bracing for potential flooding from rain and melting snow, officials said.
With temperatures expected to reach into the 50s and up to an inch of rain possible, waterways could rise and possibly flood, said Emergency Management Coordinator Tyler Peet of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office.
Officials are also eyeing the potential for ice jams. A flood watch for Oswego County is in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 1 p.m. Thursday.
A lake-effect storm brought several feet of snow to the area a few weeks ago. More than 100 inches fell in parts of Palermo, leaving people snowed in, trapped in their homes and dealing with damage.
As of Monday, Oswego County hotlines had received 212 calls for snow removal, an increase in snow removal-related injuries and a significant rise in structural collapses. More than 60 reports of collapses have been reported to the county.
Peet urged residents to take precautions as the snow thaws.
