To make paying the bills easier, Gov. Kathy Hochul is adding more ways to spend money from New York State College Choice tuition savings accounts known as 529 accounts.

“Use your 529 plans, which you start saving as early as you possibly can, using them to help pay off student loans," Hochul said. "I think it's great. I want to thank our local representatives for helping support that."

That wasn’t the only legislation Hochul signed while in Syracuse on Thursday.

She is also making changes to how board of educations outside of New York City look.

School districts outside of the city that have a high school and all Boards of Cooperative Educational Services will be required to establish a process of including a non-voting student member on the board.

“What an education, democracy that'll be for them, hopefully inspiring them to know that each of us have a right of citizenship to participate in, whether it's school boards, town boards, higher office," she said. "Everyone has a responsibility and at minimum responsibility to vote."

Also, the official name of the Syracuse Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics High School has been established. This will be the first school of its kind in the state.

“I’ve toured this facility. It's come a long way. It is going to be an epicenter of engagement and opportunities for students, as well, as we try to inspire more people to go into these fields," Hochul said.
