A former Johnson City Middle School principal pleaded guilty Tuesday to luring a child with the intention of engaging in sexual intercourse, Broome County District Attorney F. Paul Battisti said.

Daniel Erickson, 56, of Greene, pleaded to the felony in county court, admitting that he communicated with a 16-year-old girl on Snapchat between June 28, 2023, and July 7, 2023, in an attempt to meet her, but was instead arrested by county detectives, the sheriff's office said.

Erickson is expected to receive a six-month jail sentence and five years of probation when he is sentenced on July 30, Battisti said.

Erickson will turn himself in on May 6 to begin serving the jail term, and have to register as a sex offender, Battisti said.

"The trust placed in educators, particularly those in positions of authority such as principals, is sacred,” the district attorney said in a statement.

The case was investigated by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

Erickson knew the teenage girl from when she attended the middle school, officials said. Authorities said Erickson had bought a milkshake, chicken nuggets and a condom before the expected meeting.

The girl alerted school district officials to the situation, and the district notified the sheriff's office, officials said.

Erickson, who had served in the Johnson City School District in an administrative role for more than 20 years, was placed on leave last year and resigned in August 2023.
