The Onondaga County district attorney blamed Sunday's shooting in Armory Square on a gang-related altercation, and said police were on alert for any retaliatory violence.

The 25-year-old man who was shot multiple times died in a "targeted shooting following a fight between the victim, Ramal Kearse and the shooter who is believed to be a rival gang member from the Bricktown gang," Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said Tuesday.

Fitzpatrick said Kearse was a member of the Syracuse 110 gang.

He said police had taken one person into custody, though the person was not involved in the homicide. Israel Pierce was charged with discharging an illegal firearm during the shooting and second-degree criminal possession, Fitzpatrick said.

The investigation is ongoing. Tips can be sent to Syracuse police.
